Having had the opportunity to train in HPL use with the International Laser Therapy Academy and to receive a Laser Specialist license from the institute, I wanted to share a deeper understanding of HPL with you.

Everyone knows laser light — its benefits and its remarkably wide range of applications, from everyday life and disease treatment all the way to industry. But when it comes to treatment and rehabilitation, laser light helps reduce swelling, reduce injury, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the repair of muscles and tendons through a process called Photobiomodulation: the light waves stimulate cellular function to promote repair processes, regulate inflammation, and relieve pain. For laser treatment to work well, the practitioner must understand the appropriate setting variables — the energy used, the right wavelengths, the pulse pattern of the light emission, the energy density delivered to the treated area, and the technique and rhythm of moving the emitting probe — and the device itself must be of high quality and meet standards, so that energy and emission settings can be tailored to each patient’s pathology. It’s like cooking a delicious dish: you need quality ingredients, the right proportions and seasonings, and a cook who knows how to make that particular dish — only then do you get a well-balanced result.

One key variable of HPL I want to highlight is the wavelength and the energy output, which differ from machine to machine. Research has found that the therapeutic wavelength range is approximately 600–1,100 nanometers, and each wavelength affects cells and tissues differently. For example, a wavelength of 810 nanometers is well absorbed by Cytochrome C oxidase, which stimulates the cells to produce energy more effectively. A wavelength of 980 nanometers is well absorbed by the water inside the body, raising the temperature, which increases blood circulation and enhances oxygen delivery to the cells. Higher energy output also allows light energy to penetrate deeper into the body — without side effects such as heat buildup that could burn the skin at the treatment site. Beyond these key variables, many other factors affect treatment efficacy. So if you receive treatment with an HPL device, be sure to consider the quality and standards of the equipment as well.

If you have muscle or tendon pain and would like to consult a rehabilitation medicine specialist, or are interested in High Power Laser treatment, come see me at Freesia Rehab Clinic, a rehabilitation and physical therapy clinic on Rama 3.

How does a high power laser (HPL) reduce pain and stimulate tissue repair?
