The question patients ask most often is: “Does this kind of pain mean I need to see a doctor right away, or can I wait and see?” The answer depends chiefly on the nature of the symptoms.

Knee Pain That Is ‘Not Much Cause for Concern’

Mild knee pain after intense exercise, or a tight, aching feeling after sitting at a desk for long hours that resolves on its own within 1–2 days, is usually caused by muscle fatigue or unusual exertion. It can be managed with basic care: rest, cold compresses, and stretching the thigh muscles. This type of pain generally does not indicate any structural abnormality of the knee joint.

Signs That You ‘Should See a Doctor’

The following symptoms should be evaluated by a physician promptly:

Severe knee pain following an injury, or a knee that is abnormally swollen, red, or hot

Hearing a ‘pop’ or ‘click’ at the moment of injury

A knee that locks, or cannot fully straighten or bend

Knee pain persisting for more than 2 weeks without improvement

Pain that keeps getting worse, or that begins to affect walking in daily life

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Causes grouped by age

Working-age adults: patellofemoral pain syndrome, patellar tendinopathy, and tight thigh muscles

The elderly: osteoarthritis is the leading cause. Buying medication on your own, or getting massages without knowing the true cause, can make some conditions worse. A rehabilitation-medicine physician will assess your history, perform a physical examination, and may order imaging studies in order to plan care suited to each individual.

If you still have symptoms, or you’re unsure what kind of care your condition requires, you can consult a rehabilitation-medicine specialist directly at Freesia Rehab Clinic, Rama 3 — because the right care from the start helps you return to full life sooner.

References

Cross M, et al.
